Childhood Health Conditions Article

In my practice, the most common pediatric health concerns I see are frequent infections, hyperactivity, and eczema. While acute treatments can effectively manage symptoms, I find that addressing their underlying causes tends to produce the most lasting results.
Our immune systems develop the most during childhood, so colds and influenza are expected events. However, when they seem to be present all the time, or if recurring ear infections or chest infections are present, intervention is needed. Optimizing nutrient intake, ensuring adequate vitamin D levels, and using immunomodulating herbs are all excellent methods that I frequently employ.
Hyperactivity can range from mild impulsivity to full-blown Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, also known as ADD). Research has shown that dietary sensitivities play a significant role in this condition. Indeed, removal of offending foods shows symptom improvement, while reintroduction of the same foods shows symptom return. ADHD is also associated with reduced levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids and magnesium.
Eczema, like many skin conditions, is commonly linked to the health of the gastrointestinal tract. As such, food sensitivities or an imbalance of the bacteria in the intestines can be prime culprits. Dietary modification, probiotics, and omega-3 essential fatty acid supplementation are all well-indicated treatments.
As a parent I know how distressing it can be to have a child that is unwell. Fortunately, effective natural therapies are available to minimize the severity and frequency of many childhood conditions.
