Naturopathic Management of Depression
by Dr. Bryan Rade, ND

While it is perfectly healthy to feel unhappy from time to time, clinical depression is a serious condition that can have a vast impact on an individual’s life.  In addition to its effect on mood, depression can also affect energy levels, motivation, sleep, libido, appetite, and a host of other functions.

Naturopathic doctors search out and address the root cause of health imbalances, and depression is no exception.  A thorough assessment of nutrient intake, thyroid and adrenal gland function, blood sugar regulation, and other aspects of health needs to be undertaken to determine to what extent a physical origin of depression might be present.  Equally important is a discussion of life stressors and the patient’s ability to manage them on a daily basis.  Indeed, if stressors are constant and they are not dealt with in a healthy way they can accumulate over time and lead to a depressed mood.

While addressing the root cause of depression, several herbs and supplements can be considered to ease depressive symptoms during the process.  Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort) and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) are two well-researched examples that have shown great efficacy in clinical trials.  As an added benefit, their associated side-effects tend to be less frequent and mild when they are present.  It must be noted that both treatments can interact with a range of medications and other supplements, so their use should be monitored.

While St. John’s Wort and 5-HTP are great anti-depressants, it is important to note that anti-depressants primarily address symptoms.  With that being said, they are invaluable tools to help to facilitate the healing process while the root cause is being sought out and addressed.
